In fact, research from McKinsey and Company shows that 70% of all transformations fail. But why?
There are many reasons but are broadly categorised into management behaviour; employees resistance to change and the lack of necessary resources and budget.
In greater detail transformations fail where:
Management behaviour does not support change
- There is a lack of meaningful communication around the new mission, creating a mis-aligned weak culture.
- Often Leaders over-communicate that the transformation has succeeded much too soon, which leaves employees disengaged because in reality nothing has changed.
Employees resistance to change
- People are scared or sceptical, without adequate communication and direction which causes a lack of buy in.
There are inadequate resources or budget to effectively implement.
Successful Transformations typically consist of a portfolio of initiatives, which in turn consist of detailed action plans. Responsibilities are clarified, communication is constant and action is key.
