Mental toughness is a personality trait which determines how we perform when faced with stressors, pressure and challenge, irrespective of the prevailing situation.
There is a proven link between mental toughness and performance, positive behaviours and wellbeing. People with high levels of mental toughness achieve more, display a ‘can do’ attitude and deal with stress and pressure better, which is why it is brilliant that we can both measure it and then further develop it to improve individual and organisational performance!
The 4 C’s – Commitment; Control; Challenge and Confidence produce an overall picture of Mental Toughness
In summary:
Control means that “I really believe that I can do it” and “I can keep my emotions in check when doing it”
Commitment means “I promise to do it – I’ll set a goal” and “I’ll do what it takes to deliver it (hard work)”
Challenge means “I am driven to do it – I will take a chance” and “setbacks make me stronger”
Confidence means “I believe I have the ability to do it” and “I can stand my ground if I need to”
It is a misconception that Mental Toughness is a macho male dominated concept used only in highly competitive sport; as is the fact that people who are mentally tough are uncaring and self centred.
We are fully licensed and qualified in the use and interpretation of the online AQRtest tool which measures an individual’s mental toughness. The test takes around 10 minutes and provides valuable insight into an individual’s development needs, it is an extremely powerful and useful method of feedback and self awareness.
