Values Based behavioural assessment – sounds a mouthful right??
But actually broken down is really very helpful in the effective management of people.
So what is it?
Just as an individual’s actions and behaviours are a reflection of their value set, which are developed early in life; Some Organisations determine their Corporate Values in line with their Strategy and these values are often broken down into behavioural descriptors that provide guidance to employees about the behaviours applauded by the Organisation – it’s “How we work”.
These can provide Managers and Leaders with a framework and foundation for all elements of the effective management of people, from recruitment and selection, through performance management and appraisal to career planning affording the opportunity to highlight strengths and development needs – without any need for emotional discussion or confrontation.
Put simply, Company’s are very familiar with the costs associated with poor recruitment and poor performance but basing these decisions on organisation values and the corresponding expected behaviours will eliminate this.
One example of how this can help in an everyday context is a confrontation between two employees, “Respect” is a key Value, which can be defined behaviourally by “maintains high standards of personal integrity and treats people with dignity and fairness”; if published this can provide the basis of the performance or conduct discussion, which can focus on highlighting the opportunities for improvement.
