Even seasoned Coaches can make mistakes and find themselves impeding the coaching process. What Coaches understand is that they are actually opportunities to become better coaches.
Below are some of the most common and some tips on how to get the most from your coaches:
DO NOT : Talk too much, the purpose of the session is to facilitate the individual’s thinking and if you are filling the space with words they will not get where they need to go.
DO: Resist the urge to talk, tell, and direct in the early stages of coaching. When you do talk, focus on asking probing questions to generate needed information; for example, “How are you spending your time?” or “What is holding you back?”
DO NOT: Fail to listen actively, formulating your responses before they have finished their sentence.
DO: While listening to your coachee, put all other thoughts out of your head. Focus on what the person is saying, and suspend the urge to evaluate or pass judgment. If necessary, take notes to capture key comments or concerns. Practice active listening techniques.
DO NOT: Lose control of your emotions, if you’re having a bad day or are upset about something, do not engage in coaching sessions or conversations
DO: . Wait until your feelings of frustration or annoyance have passed as they may manifest in intolerance or disinterest.
DO NOT: Fail to prepare the coachee emotionally for new challenges
DO: If your coachee lacks the self-confidence to take on new challenges, address that problem before pushing the person to reach for higher performance standards or to try his or her hand at a difficult new skill
